Nordic in collaboration with ALA Architects (Helsinki, Finland) have been awarded the contract for a new cultural quarter in Tromsø, Norway. The prestigious project encompasses a 17 000sqm new building on the site of the old Mack brewery, housing a new cultural center, the Arctic Philharmonic, and the Northern Norwegian Art Museum in one building, integrating cultural life with the city center.

“The two houses will be nestled within a protective shell, its brightness standing out during the long dark periods. The lobby, our third room, will sit at the heart of the structure, acting as the glue that binds all functions together.

By combining music, performing arts, and an art museum, we lay the foundation for a cultural quarter brimming with unique experiences. These two independent cultural institutions will harmonize to create a new landmark in the Arctic city, says Thomas Lindgård Fagernes, Partner and Architect at Nordic Office of Architecture.

With “Samklang” (“Harmony”), the architects seek to seamlessly integrate the two houses into a unified structure, featuring a central core that spans all floors to ensure cohesive communication, efficient logistics and optimal site utilization – with a third room that elegantly distributes the audience and visitors across all levels. The compact volume, with its limited facade area, is a significant advantage from a sustainability perspective. This unified house will not only strengthen both institutions but provide an excellent foundation for extensive shared use and a robust starting point for the development of additional functions within the block.

In the concert hall, the Norwegian / Finnish team blends elegant, modern design with optimal functionality. Its discreet fan shape and thoughtful acoustics ensure a powerful, enveloping sound. The hall's versatility allows it to transform seamlessly from an orchestra venue to a theater. The chamber hall, with its spectacular views and flexible technical and acoustic design, is perfect for a variety of genres and events. It includes a dedicated lobby, making it ideal for both intimate performances and larger gatherings like conferences and banquets.
