The Central Bank of Iceland building is a landmark in the centre of Reykjavik, situated on a hill overlooking the city centre and the harbour. The building, completed in 1986, was designed by the founders of Arkthing-Nordic, inspired by a fortress previously located on the site.

Updated and renewed

In 2020, the Central Bank of Iceland merged with the Financial Supervisory Authority, creating a need to adapt the offices to their collective increased work force. As the architects behind the original building design, Arkthing-Nordic was commissioned to carry out the renovation.

A complete re-design of the interior of the building proved necessary, accommodating all of the staff in a modern open work environment. Great care has been taken to find the correct balance between work stations, private meeting rooms and a variety of different meeting spaces.

Reusing the material palette

With respect for the original design, the material palette is drawn from the existing building, consisting of oak, local Gabbró stone accented by blacks and greys.
