We are restoring the west coast’s navigation marks

Many are heading out to the countryside these days. Some are driving south. Others are visiting our neighbors to the north. And then there are all of us heading west – to the North Sea, where the air and life taste a bit more.

At Nordic Office of Architecture Denmark, we are busy measuring and restoring the iconic navigation marks of the west coast for the Danish Nature Agency. These marks, also known as ‘Båker’, are located all along the Jutland west coast. We have started the restoration work on Kjærgård Båke near Oksbøl, Vigsø Båke in Hanstholm, and Stenbjerg Båke in Thy.

The Båker are situated close to the sea and in the midst of untamed nature, which is protected. Here, we work among the protected dunes, beautiful heather plants, lizards, rose hips, and sea buckthorn.

So, if you find yourself on the Jutland west coast this summer, don’t miss the chance to get up close to one of these sculptural and cultural-historical navigation marks, which were erected back in the late 1800s to improve maritime safety.

We wish everyone a fantastic summer holiday!
